The term “chamber choir” connotes a relatively small group of singers that performs music suitable for small venues (originally the chamber of a fashionable home). Thus, the music performed has an intimate quality to it, unlike, say a great symphony or a lengthy classical work like Handel’s Messiah.
The Northern Lights Choir reflects this understanding in its choice of music, opting for shorter pieces and “art songs” that build on a theme. While many of these songs have roots in the folk music of many countries, they have often been arranged by classical composers. We find that audience members who are not generally attracted to classical music are nevertheless enchanted by the exquisite beauty of these songs.
